If you didn't know:

"Here be dragons" (or HC SVNT DRACONES) was how medieval cartographers would mark uncharted terrotories on maps. Actually, that's not true.

This is a fairly recent phenomenon, with the earliest such map dated ca. 1510, to denote the region of East Asia. But this may have been referring to the East Asian region and people of Dagroian. It might also have been referring to dinosaur bones being discovered in the general area, which led to draconic mythology. 

The closest phrase used in earlier times was "HIC SVNT LEONES", inscribed over Sub-Saharan Africa. Another phrase before that it would be "TERRA INCOGNITA", used by Ptolemy.
